Book Review - Brandon Sanderson
I recently picked up the Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson after reading his book in the Wheel of Time sequence and being impressed with his writing.
Warning Spoilers Throughout
Book One
The Final Empire
The idea behind this book was enough to get me thoroughly engaged within a few chapters. The premise is that the "Dark Lord" has won. The Final Empire is ruled by the victorious, immortal leader who rose to power a thousand years before. This figure created a slave race and a ruling class who ruthlessly exploit them for their labour. This structure sets up a familiar rebels vs the empire plot which is old hat but you can't go far wrong with.
The story follows Vin a slumdog girl working in a criminal slave crew who run confidence scams on unsuspecting nobles. The story also follows Kelsier a renowned slave crime figure who was caught, punished and escaped back into the underground (very much like the A team). He puts together a criminal team who's target is to overthrow the "Lord Ruler" (Dark Lord) and take his riches.
Kelsier brings Vin into his crew as he discovers she has magical powers which he also posses. The power comes from burning metals inside yourself. Each metal has its own effects on the user. These effects range from exceptional strength and speed to being able to push and pull metals.
The story follows the crews progress to their eventual goal. The story has an increasingly large scope but fulfills it's promise of excitement and action. There are some unexpected twists and I found it thoroughly engaging, particularly for the last third.
Book 2
Follows the siege of the capital. As you can imagine following a siege could be pretty boring, and yes, yes it is. Unsurprisingly the last third when the siege breaks is very exciting. Just read that bit.
Book 3
Brandon this time has another siege. Oh god. Dull. The ending is exciting and mildly satisfactory.

Writers Block
The biggest fear of a writer is that one day the ideas will dry up, that one day they have written all of their ideas and that they just grind themselves to a halt.
After receiving my £20 Maplin's credit note this is what has happened to me. I physically spent an hour in Maplins and walked out empty handed, I have spent countless hours on the website, to no avail.
Which way to turn? What to get next? I've even asked the question - "Do I actually need this?" !! - I'm so sorry.
Help.
